About Julia Buker

She/Her

Calgary born Soprano Julia Buker (She/Her) is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario’s master’s program in vocal performance.

Praised for her “beautiful honed tones and expressive singing,” She has performed a wide variety of repertoire including opera, art song, musical T

theatre, early music, choral, renaissance, and jazz. From 2019-2021, Julia sang with the professional chamber choir Musikay (Hamilton, ON), and was a chorus member and featured soloist for Chor Amica (London, ON). Julia has presented 6 solo voice recitals (1hr), performed in the Calgary Opera Chorus, sung with Calgary’s professional choir Luminous Voices, was a hired section lead for the Calgary Bach Choir, and The Bow Valley Chorus, and has performed in multiple shows presented by Cowtown Opera Company. She has worked as a choral scholar for numerous churches (St. George’s Anglican, Huron University, (London, ON), Christ Church (Calgary AB), and St. Martins Anglican Church (Calgary, AB)) and has participated in the Canadian Renaissance Music Summer School in 2018 and 2019. She currently works as a private voice/piano teacher, freelance soloist, swing dance performer and instructor, and is the lead singer in the newly formed Jazz band Cats in the Pocket. 

 

Julia started music lessons when she was 7 years old. In addition to her Bachelor and Master’s degrees in vocal performance, she also has performed at a grade 8 Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) level in piano. She played concert band percussion for 9 years, has sung in many choirs ranging from over 100 people to small chamber ensembles and virtual choirs, and has a deep passion for jazz. She is also a singer/songwriter, using guitar as her primary instrument.

Julia has been teaching music for over 10 years. Having experience in a wide variety of musical forms, Julia puts emphasis on variety into her lessons. She also teaches music theory and music history, and aims to build passion and versatility in her students.  

Recently, Julia has premiered a newly written song cycle and presented on rhythm within Canadian compositions at the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers Association with Edmonton composer Joseph Cheukman Lai.
